Annotation of a Magazine

Choosing The Original Images

This is the picture we decided to use in the contents page, we chose this because this is the one that best suited the magazine, when compared to the other pictures, it offers variety.

The other three pictures were contenders to be in the contents page but my partner and I decided these photos were too similar to the other photos we captured.

Magazine Cover (Hand-drawn)

This is the first draft of the magazine cover that I drew, the main thing that I based it around was the magazine 'FourFourTwo'. I decided to have a footballer on the front to make clear that it is a football magazine. As well as that, I decided to show what sort of articles and interviews were inside which would draw in the reader. I also put the website adress and the price at the top, to allow readers to contact the magazine and be able to sign up monthly deliveries of it etc.

Magazine Contents Page (Hand-drawn)

This is the first draft contents page that my partner did, it went with the first draft of the front cover that i made, he styled in a similar way to the magazine 'Four Four Two', which we based most of our magazine on.

The main Interviews and Articles were shown here to draw the readers in, as it would be one of the first pages that they read.

Magazine Contents Page (Draft)

This is the contents page draft that my partner did which goes with my cover, in the final one there will be more original images. There will be one in the bottom right hand corner.

Magazine Deconstruction: Four Four Two

1. Who is the target audience for this magazine? What clues are given(take a look at the image used and the language used—explain in detail):
In my opinion, the target audience for this magazine is mainly football fans aged around 15 and up. The clues for this are that obviously, there are football players on the cover so you know that it is definitely to do with football. You can also see that it is not really for younger children because of the mention of articles inside the magazine.

2. Describe how the person on the front cover looks—use adjectives.
The people on the front cover look quite tired and sweaty. They have obviously been playing football. The man in the centre looks as if he is celebrating that he has scored a goal or won a match. They all look as if they are trying their best and taking the match very seriously.

3. Magazine covers are also considered advertisements. What are the techniques that this magazine uses to sell their magazine to their readers?
The magazine advertises itself by showing the audience what is inside saying things such as “Luis Fabiano, Sergio Aguero and David Silva” which suggests that there are interviews with those footballers inside the magazine. It also says that there will be an interview with Didier Drogba and many other football players.

4. Take a look at the image on the front cover. What do each of the following connote to the reader:
Body language:
The players’ body language tells us that they are ready to win the football match.
Eye contact:
The players on the front cover are not making eye contact with us, the reader. However, they do catch the eye of the audience with their bright coloured shirts and determined expressions.
Facial expression:
As I said, the facial expressions of the players show us their confidence on the football field. They look tired but courageous.
Clothing:
The three players are all wearing football shirts of the teams that they play for, either internationally or club. The shirts are quite bright and eye catching which helps the reader see the magazine from far away.
Camera angle and lighting:
The images on the cover are taken from a real football match so there is no lighting involved. There is however a small image advertising a different interview at the side which has a spotlight from the top.
Makeup:
The players are not wearing makeup because they are not posing for the photo, they are in the middle of a football match.

5. Does the front page convey responsible messages to the target audience? Say why or why not.
The front cover sends us a good message, that these people are playing football and staying out of trouble and doing something with their lives. It gives teenagers a good example.

6. What information does the cover give you about what the magazine contains?
The cover clearly shows the audience that it is a magazine about football because of the fact that there are three people playing football right in the centre of the page. It also shows us a couple of examples of the sorts of articles that are inside.

7. What do the following convey (what do they potentially mean) to the potential reader?

a. The title: the title is ‘FourFourTwo’, it is a reference to the popular formation that most football teams use nowadays.

b. The image on the front cover: it tells the reader that there will be articles and/or interviews with the players who are there (Drogba, Fabiano, Aguero and Silva).

8. Do you think the cover will appeal to a potential reader? Explain how and why.
Yes I do because it is quite an exciting cover and the players in the centre are big and very eye catching. They are also exciting players in general and they would be very interesting to read about.

9. How is it similar to titles in the same genre? How is it different?
I think it is the best football magazine that exists in this country, the articles are interesting and the interviews are extremely gripping.
